Reaction to “Live and Work”

Ⅰ.Summary
 The story that I chose summarize and react to is “Live and Work”. It was submitted by Stephen in 2008.
This story is a story of father worked hard for a family. But father died when he was going to
make much time with his family.


Ⅱ.Reaction
1.Character
 A main character of this story is father. This story is being written mainly about father. And his wife and son appear to it.

2.Theme
 I think the theme of this story is “What is important thing of life”. The father loved his family, so he worked hard. But, he died the end of the story. I think this story preach the importance to spend with a family as well as earning money.

3.Appeal
 This story has an appeal. It is the readers can think what is important for life? or what is true happiness?


Ⅲ.General opinion
 After I read this story, I thought about life. I think work is important to live, but I have to spend many time with family.

Reaction to “The Important Things in Life”

Ⅰ.Summary
 The story I chose to summarize and react to is “The Important Things in Life” by Stephen.
A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him. He picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded fill it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter. The professor said to his student “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things - your family,your partner, your health, your children- things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter - like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else, the small stuff. The rest is just sand.”


Ⅱ.Reaction
1.Character
 A main character of this story is a philosophy professor. And his student appear it. He experimented with a mayonnaise jar to tell a important things of life.

2.Metaphor
 The rocks, pebbles and sand represented the important things of life. Rocks are important things. For example, your family, your partner, your health, your children. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, your car. The sand means rest.

3. Appeal
 The professor tells the student. The most important things is rocks. It is easy to express it by words, but it is difficult for us to understand.


Ⅲ.General opinion
 This story about important things in life. I agree the professor's opinion. The most important things family, partner, health. If there is nothing, I can't enjoy my life.

Reaction to “A Red Red Rose”

Ⅰ.Summary
 The poem I chose to summarize and react to is “A Red Red Rose” by Robert Burns.
The type of this poem seems to be lyric poetry because a man read to the poem for a woman that he likes.


Ⅱ.Reaction
1.Rhyme
 This poem has rhyme such as "June" and "tune", "sun" and "run". It gives the strong impression to a reader by rhyming, and a reader can imagine easily.

2.Metaphor
 There are a lot of metaphors in this poem. A man liken to his lovers like a red rose, melody, the seas, the rocks, the sands.

3.Connotation
 "Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
 And the rocks melt wi' the sun".
From this part, A man really loves to a woman.


Ⅲ.General opinion
 This poem and a man are very passionate. I think he calculated for close when he makes this poem, so I can imagine a woman and the scene.

Reaction to  “Remember Me”

Ⅰ. Summary
 The poem I chose the summarize and react to is “Remember Me” by Christina Rosetti.
The type of this poem seems to be lyric poetry because the author wishes to remember her. For example, “Better by far you should forget and smile than that you should remember and be sad.”


Ⅱ.Reaction
1.Theme
 This poem is very short, but theme is clear.
The title shows she wants to remember me for people always.

2.Rhythm
 The author uses the word “remember me” many times.
It can impress for the readers.

3.Imagery
 The readers can imagine variously.
Whom did she write it to? Family, friend, lovers or others?


Ⅲ.General opinion
 After I read this poem, I thought the death. The author wants to remember her.
If I die now, I want to remember me too, and how many people remember me?
I think when someone die, I don't want to forget especially important person for me-family, friend and lovers.
